Chair, WSSF 2018 Local Organizing Committee
(Vice-president, Director of the University Libraries and Director of the University Archives, Kyushu University)
On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee of the Fourth World Social Science Forum, it is my pleasure to welcome scholars from throughout the world to Fukuoka, Japan, from the 25th to the 28th of September, 2018. This is the first time that the WSSF conference will be held in Asia, and we look forward to making it a successful and memorable forum for all.
A broad range of topics which are open to interdisciplinary and worldwide interrogation fall under the theme “Security and Equality for Sustainable Futures”. In recent years, global crises have compelled people throughout the world to reconsider the sustainability of human societies. Human activities are also recognized as having a significant global impact on Earth’s geology and ecosystems. This in turn requires inclusive and coordinated action to ensure equality and security for human beings. The social sciences and humanities have a vital role to play in achieving such a sense of security in dialogue among citizens and policy makers. This forum seeks to create a platform for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research which will contribute to the creation of a sustainable world.
Fukuoka is one of Japan’s most historical cities. The forum will be held at Fukuoka Convention Center, which is located in the Hakata area of the city, a major regional trading hub dating back as far as the 6th century. Since its establishment as the fourth Imperial University in 1911, among all major Japanese research universities, Kyushu University has maintained the strongest ties with Korea, China and the rest of East Asia. Kyushu University’s role as an academic and socio-economic hub that unites Asia continues into the 21st century. It is a great pleasure for Kyushu University to host the first ever WSSF conference in Asia. We hope that WSSF 2018 in Fukuoka will serve as a precious venue for all attendees to share their experiences and wisdom for the benefit of world and future.
